Wedding Hair and Makeup Planning Guide | Aurelio Salon Howell NJ
Wedding Hair and Makeup Planning Guide from Aurelio Salon & Spa in Howell, NJ
There is nothing our team loves more than being part of a wedding day. The excitement, the dress, the details — and most importantly, the hair and makeup that will be photographed and remembered forever. At Aurelio Salon & Spa in Howell, NJ, our bridal specialists understand that wedding hair is its own art form. It requires finesse, planning, and a deep understanding of the bride’s vision, her dress, and who she is as a person. Here is how we approach the bridal process from start to finish.
Step 1: The Initial Bridal Consultation
The first step is sitting down with one of our bridal specialists — plan about 30 minutes. During this meeting, your stylist will walk you through our bridal packages, schedule your trial, and book your wedding day appointment. Most importantly, this is when we hear your vision. We look at photos of your dress and begin planning the ideal hair. Strapless and low-back designs often lend themselves to longer, more flowing styles, while higher necklines and detailed backs tend to suit polished updos that show off the dress. The hair should complement the overall look — not compete with it.
We also discuss whether you want to grow your hair out, consider extensions for added length or volume, or adjust your color before the wedding. Most brides look best in their natural color or a refined, enhanced version of it.
Step 2: The Bridal Hair and Makeup Trial
At least two months before the wedding, the bride should come in for a trial. Bring photos of your dream hair, a photo of your dress, your veil or headpiece, any hair accessories you plan to wear, and a camera. Plan about an hour for hair and up to an hour for makeup.
During the trial, your stylist will work through your ideas, build the style, and place every pin and accessory so you can see exactly what you will look like on the day. Take photos from every angle. Wear the style for the rest of the day to see how it holds. This appointment is your opportunity to make adjustments, communicate anything you want changed, and finalize the plan so the wedding morning is smooth and stress-free.
Step 3: The Week-Before Appointment
About a week before the wedding, come in for a pre-wedding hair appointment. This is when we finalize any color services — highlights, gloss, gray coverage, or a deep conditioning treatment to ensure the hair is in its best possible condition. We also finalize the cut and shape at this appointment. We will not create the wedding style at this visit — that style should be new and unseen when you walk down the aisle.
Step 4: The Wedding Morning
If your hair will be worn in an updo, do not wash your hair the morning of the wedding. Freshly washed hair can be too soft and slippery to hold pins securely. Wear a button-down shirt or robe so nothing has to be pulled over your finished hair. Arrive 15 minutes early with your veil, headpiece, and any hair accessories. Then sit back, relax, and enjoy the experience. Our team will handle everything else.
A Few Additional Tips
Always do a trial — it is money well spent and prevents surprises on the day. Stick with the style you loved at the trial rather than changing it last minute. Think about the time of year — summer weddings in New Jersey can mean humidity, which favors pinned styles over loose blowouts. And always speak up if something doesn’t feel right during the styling process. It is always easier to adjust while the stylist is still working.
